Sometimes Four Limbs are Better than Two

Yesterday I had to come to grips with the fact that it was time. I couldn’t put it off for one more day. I had to stop hoping someone else would take care of it.

Ethan’s fingernails HAD to get clipped.

The previous day, he had scratched his face all up, and he looked like a little “street urchin,” as my dad jokingly put it. When Ethan was a tiny baby, I used a file to tame his nails… I never could bring myself to use the clippers. But lately he’s gotten so strong that I can’t hold his finger still long enough to file. I had to clip, and it had to be done immediately.

I first laid him on his tummy, thinking that I could use one foot to hold the hand flat on the floor and clip with the other foot and hand. He was too strong. Next, I rolled him onto his back and grabbed his hand with my left foot. That didn’t work either. He squirmed and tugged until I lost my grip.

When all was said and done, I had indeed accomplished my task of clipping his nails, and I had used all four of my limbs to do it!

For now, his face is safe from fingernail scratches, and I have discovered the method of nail-clipping that works for us. Maybe next time it won’t take half of an hour!

  • I am amazed by your persistence and determination. I struggle clipping my 21 months old’s nails and I do have hands I can use. I admire you and your stories are great and inspiring!

  • You amaze me daily with your postings on here. You have touched areas that I would have thought to ask yet didn’t, I didn’t feel I knew you well enough to ask- such as eating in public and how you deal with the response from those around you in the restaurant? You are such a strong, beautiful and amazing woman.
